We had to wait a baricade for a plane to land and taxi to the terminal. In order to get to Gibralter you first walk passed immigrations/customs (with wave at our closed passports) and then cross an active runway on foot!

Peaking out of the giant rock were cannons from 300 years ago. This was a fortress, a bastion of the British colonial empire. It was oh so conforting to be able to read all the signs and understand the background noise. It felt a little bit like us – people trapped in a foreign land hanging on to each other to feel the peace of home.
