Jennica & Matthew Geddert's Ramblings

Andrew's Triathlon

Aug 6 Andrew's Triathlon by Jennica in United States

Andrew has been diligently training to participate in the Vineman Triathlon and we went up to Santa Clara in Napa Valley to cheer along with his coach, Gary Purtee, and Dad, Ben and Dominick. This was an ironman triathlon which means that it included a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, followed by a 26.2 mile marathon. In true Geddert fashion, Andrew had a detailed and precise plan for his pacing which he executed with calculated discipline. He woke up at 2am to consume calories through some weird goo, slept some more, and was well prepared at the starting mark at 6:45am:

We watched them all take their places like bobbing q-tips and watched the tempest created in the stream by the swimmers until he switched to his bike:

Then we took a nice nap. After finished his biking, he was off and running his laps. At 5:13pm as he passed by, dad called out “You’re right on pace!” Andrew called out, “See you at 7:03.” Well, if you click on this picture and check out its properties you can see exactly how calculated that discipline was (the photo was taken at 7:03pm exactly):

He crossed the finish line 14 hours and 11 minutes after he started. He was really tired and we are really proud of him.
