Governance
Aug 6 Governance
We went to Churchill’s underground lair, where he commanded the troups during WW2. Inside the lair, was the best biography either of us had ever seen. The treasure of the museum for me was an Enigma machine that they captured from the Germans. The British were intercepting and decrypting messages long before the Germans knew about it and this may well have swayed the war in favor of the allies. It was from in this foxholl that Churchill made the decision to allow a city to be bombed in order to keep it a secret.
Our tour of Parliment was interesting because our guide was able to explain the nuances of British governance in the detail we both wanted. It is interesting to think that an Olympic sprinter, a Scottish actor, a singer from Liverpool and a former prime minister sit on the highest court in the land – the House of Lords. Ever since removing hereditory positions in 1998, the House of Lords is comprised of the elites from extremely diverse fields. Although it seems crazy, this system actually makes a lot of sense. They truly transcend the evils of “politics” we decry in our countries. Mind you, I can think of a number of rappers I wouldn’t want on the Supreme Court.
