Party Like It's 4705
Feb 22 Party Like It's 4705
After 14 hours at 40,000 feet we descended upon Hong Kong. Although we didn’t know it when we booked the tickets, we were arriving on Chinese New Year. Yay, year of the golden pig! We were too late for the parade, but on day two of the festivities we saw spectacular fireworks with symbols we couldn’t read, universally understood smiley faces, and rocket-propelled, parachuting glowing lanterns. The crowds were huge, civilized, and the police crowd management was impeccible.
I am impressed by the social awareness. Public service announcements remind you to “Show you have a loving heart. Let’s care for others!” and care for public health, “Mommy says poo before you dip” (in the pool). But capitalism is rearing its impersonal head and you can feel the unique cultural differences being assimilated into the collective capitalist conciousness.
