Reducing data complexity

Jan 1 Reducing data complexity by Matthew

One of my computer pet peeves is how much time proper, reliable and secure data maintenance requires. I probably go overboard, but currently this uses an absurd amount of manual effort. So, a personal goal of mine for this year is to automate data maintenance and archiving. To that end, I will:

  • Automate my data management procedures and document them.
  • Provide backups for “cloud” services I rely on (like flickr, gmail, etc.) that contain large amounts of my data and metadata.
  • Backup the few remaining pieces of easily digitized data we have (like our remaining photographs).
  • Purge unnecessary and duplicate data and establish patterns to continue to do this in the future with as little labor as possible.
  • Standardize my digital archives on open and documented file formats.

While doing these things I will keep an eye on my growing privacy concerns. More on this is to come…
