Scottish Architecture
Jul 26 Scottish Architecture
Our first night in a hotel on this trip was in Glasgow. The city was rather uneventful; in large part because we rushed through it.
After Glasgow we stopped by “The Hill House” by Charles Renee Mackintosh. The outside was nothing worth writing about but the interior was simply amazing. The proportions of the rooms, nooks, halls all seemed just right, unlike the many monstrous manors and castles we have visited. My best description of it is similar to an early Frank Lloyd Wright interior I have seen in books. It was organic and impressive without being imposing. The only significant difference between the two architects I know of is that Mackintosh, in true Scottish fashion, finished the house significantly under budget (something Wright never did). If all architects were like this, I never would have quit architecture school.
