The Year of the Dentist
Jun 5 The Year of the Dentist
One year ago, right about this time, I had some intense tooth pain that steadily got worse. I went to the emergency student clinic at USC and the dentist, a fellow Canadian who graduated and practiced dentistry in Australia and was recertifying for the US, took one look inside my mouth and said, "I see the problem - it's the big hole in your wisdom tooth." And she accurately indicated the tooth in question. See if you can guess which one it was:
A few hours later the problem tooth was extracted and I was feeling good (and not just because of the Novicane). Janice became my dentist and got started with the less urgent problems in my mouth. Well, it turned out that I had three really big cavities and several more small ones. Three dentists (Janice, a student specializing in root canals at USC, and a faculty dentist at UCLA), one root canal, one crown, a bazillion fillings, maxing out our good annual dental insurance allowance (twice!), and 23 dentist appointments later, I'm pleased to announce that I have decided to give up my "hobby" of visiting dentists and to take up flossing instead.
