Time Travel Is Possible

We decided in Rome to continue on to Greece, having previously considered saving it for another trip, and set out for the ferry on the eastern coast. When deciding between the northern route and the southern route, the potential for a quick stop in Pompei tipped the choice in favor of the southern route. That turned out to be a very good decision.

We arrived late in the day – only two and a half hours until closing and too late to pick up an audioguide. We were armed only with a basic map and our somewhat adequate knowledge of ancient Roman civilizations ;) We entered the archeological site that encompassed the city that has been frozen in time by molten lava since 79 CE. As we poked around, we were filled with wonder at the beautiful art and gorgeous architecture.

This tragic “day-in-the-life” of the city made the ways in which early Christians and their contemporaries lived become truly real. We have much in common with those ancient civilizations including from graffiti to sidewalks to marble kitchen counter-tops.
