Jennica & Matthew Geddert's Ramblings
Visiting in Germany
Sep 25 Visiting in Germany
In terms of touristy adventures, not much has happened in the last couple weeks. We've been visiting instead. What fun it was to stay with Wilhelm and Lisa. I thoroughly enjoyed a little English conversation with people I knew. We next headed off to Ingolstadt where Matthew lived in his early teen years. He tells me the place is just the same as when he left. It was lovely to stay in his old house with his friends. While we were there, we saw a church ceiling which, in both our opinions, is way cooler than the Sistine Chapel because it's one big integrated mural instead of a multitude of panels.
When we finally said goodbye to the car in Deutschhof and showed Oma and Opa pictures of where we slept, we were rather shocked by the quantity of miles we put on it and how many nights we slept in the car. To be honest, I'm thrilled that we won't be sleeping in a car in the foreseeable future.
It was harvest time at the farm and we got to see and sample the process from grape to wine. I've never eaten such delicious grapes as those freshly-picked ripened-on-the-vine ones.
Matthew's uncle brought us to a truck show in Hannover on the weekend. It reminded me of those years I spent working at a trucking company in Calgary. It was pretty cool for the first two or three hours, but it got a little boring after a while. Near the end, however, there was a demonstration of the new computerized braking systems that go on buses. It was very fun to watch the hapless volunteers sitting in the buses as the drivers did their best to overturn the buses by careening around. People of all ages were gripping the seat in front of them in terror. I sure hope I'm never in a bus with the old system once drivers get used to the new system!
We stayed in Bremen for the night at another of Matthew's uncle's. It was really nice to stroll around the city see the statue of the musicians. I wish there were such wonderful pedestrian districts in more cities.
