Deck Building and Meat Processing

This fall in Elm Creek I did two things I hadn’t yet done. I built a deck on the back of Mom and Dad Willems’s house and I was involved in all steps of going from live cow to eating sausage from it three days later. Working in an office, as I have done for the last nine years now, simply cannot let you fully experience all life has to offer. I’m as guilty as the next person of losing too much understanding of interconnectedness by staying in nice compartmentalized and seemingly efficient labor boxes. Although I know programming and network infrastructure work are important and useful, they are a little too ethereal to be the focus of 60 hours a week.
